Imogen Kearns

Clinical Psychologist specialising in working with parents

Imogen is a Specialist Clinical Psychologist with over 15 years’ experience working in the NHS, third sector and clinical research settings, and expertise in working in CAMHS and child and family services.

Imogen takes a non-blaming, compassionate stance working with families, and as a parent and step-parent herself, has lived experience of how parenting brings unexpected challenges that may need professional support to navigate. Bringing warmth and authenticity to her clinical work, Imogen grounds her clinical practice in the context of developmental psychology and how this relates to understanding and supporting emotional and behavioural difficulties. She finds that her clients can benefit from a deeper knowledge of their relationship to their children through understanding concepts around boundaries and emotional regulation through the lens of a their child’s individual temperament, brain and developmental stage.

Imogen integrates different therapeutic approaches which she finds can transform family interactions and patterns that may be creating conflict or ‘stuckness’ in the family’s functioning. She is also trained in EMDR to work with adults experiencing difficulties related to distressing memories around traumatic events (recent or historic), attachment trauma or phobias. She also specialises in working with parents of children with neurodevelopmental conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD, adjusting and coping with physical and learning disability as a family, and preparing for birth and parenting in infancy.

Imogen holds a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the University of East London and is a registered practitioner psychologist with the Health Care Professional Council (HCPC). She is currently a service lead in the NHS in a Women’s Health and Perinatal team, where she supports women in the context of beginning their parenting journey and with a wide range of mental health difficulties. She also enjoys sharing her knowledge through teaching and is currently a module lead and lecturer on the Developmental Psychology and Clinical Practice MSc, at the Anna Freud Centre. She also teaches on Clinical Psychology Doctorate courses. She is passionate about grounding her work in the latest evidence base, but believe it is important to balance this with learning from the most important ‘experts’: the families she is privileged to work with.
