Georgina Barnes

Senior Clinical Psychologist specialising in working with children, young people and families

Dr Georgina (Georgie) Barnes is a chartered clinical psychologist who specialises in working with children, young people and families. Georgie acts as a lead clinician for the Neurodevelopmental Assessments at Harwood Child Psychology.

Georgie has spent many years in the NHS working as a senior clinical psychologist with young people with complex mental health difficulties, many of whom did not want to engage with help. This has meant that Georgie has developed an excellent ability to quickly build relationships with young people and teenagers in a way that makes them feel truly valued and cared for.

Her clinical experience and training working in specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) mean that Georgie is comfortable and knowledgeable about working with most mental health difficulties that present in young people. In her current NHS role, she is a senior clinical psychologist working across London to intensively support young people who are at risk of needing an inpatient admission. She works with the young people and their families to help the young person manage their mental health and make home and school life easier.

Georgie has a keen interest in working with all young people, in particular young people with autism spectrum conditions and intellectual disabilities. She can assess for these conditions and also support the mental health challenges that are commonly associated. She works with young people, teenagers and families to support them with their emotional regulation, teaching new skills to the young people and their families.

Georgie is a registered practitioner psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and a fully qualified chartered clinical psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS). She holds a doctorate degree in clinical psychology and a master’s level degree in mental health studies. She teaches and lectures widely, including on MSc courses at King’s College London and to a nationwide audience, teaching important clinical skills to clinicians around the country on how to work therapeutically with children and young people.

Georgie has a keen interest in mental health research and publishes papers in high quality, peer-reviewed journals, further highlighting her expertise. See below for a selection of her most recent publications:
