Consultant Clinical Psychologist specialising in Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Children, Young People and Families

Dr Catherine Sholl is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist specialising in working with children, young people and families. She is Associate Clinical Director of Assessments within Harwood Child Psychology.

Catherine also works within the renowned South London and Maudsley NHS Trust as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and is the lead for the National and Specialist CAMHS Autism and Intellectual Disabilities Intensive Intervention Team (AID-IIT). Catherine has worked for over 20 years in the NHS and has particular interest and expertise in assessment and psychological interventions for children and young people with Learning Disabilities, Autism and emotional/behavioural/mental health difficulties.

In addition to her clinical psychology doctorate, Catherine has undertaken a range of additional training courses across numerous areas including: Autism assessment; parenting programmes/interventions; direct interventions for children and young people; and extensive training in supervision, Management and Leadership. This places Catherine in a very good position to support families facing even the most complex difficulties. She now also trains others in child and adolescent mental health assessment and intervention.

Over the last 20 years Catherine has worked with children, young people and adults with learning disabilities and neurodevelopmental disorders in a variety of settings. These have included family homes, special schools, care settings, inpatient settings, paediatrics and community CAMHS.

In addition to her current role, Catherine has previously worked as lead clinical psychologist in a multi-disciplinary paediatric autism assessment team. She has managed a local CAMHS-LD team, and was the lead clinician in setting up the Ealing Intensive Therapeutic and Short Breaks Service (ITSBS). This service gained national acclaim and has been cited as a model of good practice in various national reports and guidance.

Catherine is involved in the development of national policy, guidance and practice in relation to supporting children and young people with Learning Disabilities and Autism. She has been on the committee for the Association of Child and Adolescent Mental Health (ACAMH) London and South East Region CAMHS Learning Disability Special Interest Group (LASER).

She is also a Core Member of the Challenging Behaviour Foundation’s National Strategy Group. Catherine sits on the NHS England Clinical Reference Group for children and young people with Autism or Learning Disability and has contributed to national advisory groups.

Catherine is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and a member of ACAMH.  She holds a doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology. She teaches and lectures nationwide, and has a keen interest in research and publication. A selection of her publications include:
